Some terminology to know:
- Inside Mount – Mounting of the blinds Onside of the window casing. Most blinds, rollers, and cellular shades are Inside Mount or ISM
- Outside mount – Mounting of the blinds Outside of the window casing. Most verticals and sliding glass door installs are Outside mount or OSM
Measuring
To measure for Inside mount you will need to determine the NARROWEST width of your window frame by taking 3 measurements of the inside of the casing. One at the top, one at the middle, and one at the bottom. For an inside mount you are measuring the inside opening where the blind will sit, this measurement should be to the nearest 1/8th. You will need to do the same for the height. Measure the opening on the left, middle, and right to determine the LONGEST measurement of the window frame. You will also need to measure the depth of the window frame, this is measured from the window to the outside edge of the window frame where the wall and the window sill meet.
To measure for an Outside mount you will need to measure the window opening, including any trim or molding, and add the desired overlap to the measurement. Typically this is 2″ on each side, or 4″ added to the measurement. For the height you will also need to measure the window opening, including any trim or molding and add the desired overlap. For windows it is typically 3″ on the top and 3″ on the bottom to ensure enough overlap of the blind on the window frame. For sliding glass doors, add 2″ to the top of the measurement.
Once you have completed the measurements, you can upload them to our website to get a quote and finish up your order.
